(USA) December 7, 2011 – Today nine of the world’s leading environmental advocacy organizations launch the ENGO Network on CCS (Environmental NGO Network on Carbon Capture and Sequestration), formed to jointly pursue domestic and international policies and regulations enabling CCS to deliver on its emissions reduction potential safely and effectively.

HOUSTON, October 27 – Clean Air Task Force, a national environmental organization dedicated to atmospheric protection and reducing global climate change, has announced the establishment of a new Gulf States-China program to hasten the commercial scale development of carbon capture and storage technology in both countries.

"AEP’s decision to halt the Mountaineer project clearly underscores the need for strong federal emissions standards and effective incentives for early technology adopters. As AEP noted, it’s difficult for utility commissions to approve such projects without regulatory certainty. We now look ahead to EPA to propose a robust New Source Performance Standard rule in September that will require effective and affordable controls on greenhouse gas emissions from coal-fired power plants."

"We're pleased that this major carbon capture and storage project is going forward. For any CCS project, it's vitally important that the geology is well-understood, so we look forward to seeing FutureGen’s complete detailed geologic analysis of the Morgan County site. Without carbon capture and storage (CCS), the most serious consequences of global climate change can’t be avoided because fossil fuel use is projected to increase 50% worldwide in the coming decades. The technology to store carbon dioxide deep underground is already available, and DOE’s choice today helps advance its eventual widespread deployment."

“I’m pleased Cash Creek received its final air permit from Kentucky regulators,” said John Thompson, Director of the Coal Transition Project of the Clean Air Task Force. “The plant will use coal gasification technology to enable deep reductions in many air pollutants."

The Clear Air Task Force, an independent environmental advocacy organization not supported by industry, today applauded Energy Secretary Chu for providing nearly $1 billion in grants for globally significant low-carbon coal projects. Using different technologies, each of the projects will capture and sequester up to 90% of the carbon dioxide (CO2) from coal.
